Ogwen Cottage has developed an outdoor adventure based residential programme incorporating STEM  subjects.

The main aim of the course is to stimulate pupil learning by placing students within a practical and tangible situation, within the outdoor environment.

The assignments are based around three outdoor activities: mountain walking, climbing and paddle sport.

The climbing project for example looks at mathematical  benefits within systems used in climbing, design of climbing equipment and the specialist materials required, with additional topics including friction and forces

Theory sessions run in the evening introduced the topics with practical work involving hanging weights, breaking cord and cutting ropes, Pupils then put  things to the test during a day of climbing. The last day of the project may include a visit to the DMM factory (A leading manufacturer of quality climbing equipment) where pupils  can look at the technology behind the manufacture and testing of climbing equipment.

As well as STEM studies all activities helped the pupils enhance their teamwork, communication and problem solving skills and found the week physically and mentally challenging

STEM Taster Weekend for Teachers.

Ogwen Cottage, Great Barr School and the SLC (Science Learning Centre) have got together to provide a weekend of activities which look at Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths in the outdoor environment.
